THE RIGHT STUFF: WHICH IS THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER FOR YOU?

Protein Powder. A simple name for one of the most debated food supplements amongst bodybuilding and weight training circles. A simple name also, for something that comes from such a wide variety of sources and is sold under so many different brands.

With so many types on the market, how do you know which one is the best for your needs? We hear a lot about Whey Protein Isolate, but what of the other protein powders available and how do they differ? Which is the best for gaining muscle and which is the best when you want to get lean? This month I will answer these questions and give a brief summary of the 'strengths' and 'weaknesses' of the main types of protein powder.

MAKING YOUR SUPPLEMENTS WORK FOR YOU!

Every year the supplement market seems to get more confusing.  We are bombarded with dozens of new products, each sounding more amazing than the last.  The number of brands on the market is ever increasing to the point where it is too confusing for the average trainer to discern what is worth buying and what is best left on the shelf.

We rely a lot on our friends and training partners to let us know what they have tried but in many cases supplements will get a bad rap simply because people are expecting miracles from them.  I've been in Health Shops and people have told me that brand X protein powder didn't work for them'.  What on earth do they mean?  What were they expecting the product to do?  It is a protein supplement, not muscle in a tub!   The point I'm trying to make is that regardless of how good the supplement, it will not make up for a lack of correct training and nutrition.

HITTING YOUR PEAK - PART 1

After competing in Bodybuilding shows for nine years I have no doubt in my mind that one of the most difficult aspects of competition is hitting your peak on the day.  The last week leading up to the show is crucial to hitting that peak and there are so many variables to take into account; depleting, carbing-up, water depletion, sodium and potassium levels, training, aerobics, etc, etc…..

"How do I peak for a show?" is one of the most frequently asked questions I get.  There is no guaranteed method for success, but there are a few things I have learnt over the years.
